Activity Description

This presentation discusses the academic skills and deficits associated with Asperger's Syndrome. Participants will learn a variety of behavioral supports designed to enhance the child's ability to initiate assignments, increase motivation, decrease distraction, compensate for gross and fine motor deficits, adapt the curriculum, modify academics, and increase cognitive processing.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome as it relates to the academic setting.
  2. List core issues found in the academic setting.
  3. Describe strategies to produce positive change in the academic setting.

  1. At least 5 participants

Author Biography

Timothy P. Kowalski, M.A., CCC-SLP, has a speech-language pathology practice in Winter Park, Florida. He has extensive experience in treating individuals within the autism spectrum and has spoken extensively on this topic nationally and internationally. In addition to treating individuals in his office he also provides consultation to academic facilities for children with development and autism spectrum disabilities in both inclusive and self-contained settings.

Tim was named "TEAMS 2000 Speech-Language Pathologist of the Year" for his work with autism in the four-county greater Orlando region.

Tim resides in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, who is also a speech-language pathologist and a partner in their practice.
