Activity Description

This course examines the research regarding social language development, the standardization study results the test gathered on more than 1100 subjects, and how language functioning and social skill development are related. Discrete skills related to social language functioning will be identified. Recommendations for further research are included.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Summarize pertinent research on social language skills usually developed by kindergarten
  2. Understand early childhood development of social language
  3. Identify important social language skills to include in the curriculum for students with autism or language disorders, based on a developmental hierarchy
  4. Understand the connection between language functioning and the development of social skills

Authors' Biographies

Linda Bowers, M.A., is a co-founder and co-owner of LinguiSystems. Linda worked as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools from 1974-1982 and has experience serving language disordered students of all ages. Linda has spent the last thirty years as a test researcher and writer.

Rosemary Huisingh, M.A., is a co-founder and co-owner of LinguiSystems. Rosemary worked as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools from 1970-1984 and has experience serving primarily elementary language disordered students. Rosemary has spent the last thirty years as a researcher and writer of tests and therapy materials.
