   Activity Description
 
This presentation provides definitions, behavior and physical characteristics, genetics, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria for 12 syndromes: Autism, Rett’s, Asperger’s, Landau-Kleffner, Fragile X, Williams, Angelman, Prader Willi, Tourette’s, Downs, Fetal Alcohol, and Selective Mutism. New research and medical information and ethical issues are discussed.

  1. Recognize the physical, communication, and social anomalies associated with various developmental syndrome disorders
  2. Identify a variety of syndromes and the characteristics pertinent to speech-language- hearing assessment and intervention

   Author Bio
 
Gail J. Richard, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Professor and Department Chair at Eastern Illinois University in Communication Disorders and Sciences. Gail’s first professional employment was in the Iowa public schools as a speech-language pathologist where she worked with children with language-learning disabilities and preschoolers with emotional disorders. After four years in the schools, Gail joined the faculty at Eastern Illinois University where she has been a clinical supervisor and instructor dealing with various childhood language disabilities for 25 years. Her areas of expertise focus on childhood and adolescent language disorders, such as autism, selective mutism, language processing, learning disabilities, and other developmental disorders. She is a popular presenter for workshops around the country due to the practical nature of the information she shares with her audiences.
