Activity Description

This course describes intervention materials and strategies for English Language Learners (ELL) with language-learning disabilities (LLD). Therapy techniques and materials appropriate for students in preschool through adolescence are presented. Suggestions for integrating strategies and materials and working with families are included. This course offers 0.2 CEUs / 2 CEEs.

Learner Objectives

Participants who successfully complete this activity will be able to:

  1. Define the nature of a Language Learning Disability (LLD) in an English Language Learner (ELL) student
  2. Discuss federal laws pertaining to service delivery for these students
  3. List ways to incorporate multicultural materials and strategies into therapy and classroom settings
  4. Outline strategies for modifying the physical and linguistic environment of ELL students with LLD
  5. Describe an appropriate hierarchy for teaching new vocabulary words to ELL students with LLD
  6. List specific strategies for increasing the oral and literacy skills of ELL preschool students with LLD
  7. Discuss ways to increase the literacy skills of elementary and adolescent ELL students with LLD
  8. Summarize strategies for increasing family involvement in students' learning

Author Biography

Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin, Ph.D., CCC-SLP received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. She is a Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology at California State University, Sacramento. In addition, she is a part-time itinerant speech pathologist for the Elk Grove Unified School District where she provides direct services to elementary students. Dr. Roseberry- McKibbin has written over 60 publications, including six books, and she has made over 180 presentations at the state, national, and international levels. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Roseberry-McKibbin lived in the Philippines from ages 6 to 17.
