Activity Description
This activity provides an overview of RTI and the core principles that guide and define the structure of a RTI model. In-depth information is provided on the responsibilities of the SLP throughout the Three-Tier RTI framework and how this contributes to the three-prong purpose of RTI - prevention, intervention and identification.

Learner Objectives
Participants who successfully complete this activity will be able to:
- Explain the evolution of the RTI movement and its effect on general education instruction and special education eligibility and services, with special focus on the implication for SLPs
- Understand the eight essential core principles of RTI for developing a strong student infrastructure and providing effective instruction for every student
- Describe the Three-Tier Model of School Support for RTI, including the key elements essential to each tier, pivot points for change, tools to facilitate change, and activities SLPs can implement at each tier
- Understand how to make data-driven decisions in RTI, including how to use data from assessments to make decisions about intervention, the importance of integrated data management tools, which data are best to use at each tier, and the SLP's role in RTI data
- Know the range of speech and language services, both direct and indirect, that may be considered at each tier of a three-tier RTI model
- Understand how RTI fits with special education, including when to refer a child to special education and how RTI influences eligibility decisions
Author Biography
Judy Rudebusch, M.A., Ed.D., CCC-SLP, holds a doctorate in education administration and has a keen interest in the application of systems theory and best practices for continuous improvement. For over two decades, Judy has applied continuous improvement models to school-based speech-language pathology.
