Activity Description

This course describes the causes and sequelae of vocal abuse in children. The course describes ways to use reinforcement to change the child’s behavior to eliminate vocal abuse and to increase use of vocal hygiene techniques. Strategies to gain the support of adults in the child’s environment and ways to help the child transfer skills to all settings are addressed. This course offers 0.2 CEUs / 2 CEEs.

  • identify types of vocal abuses.
  • list changes to the vocal folds that can occur as a result of abuse.
  • apply appropriate strategies for changing vocal behaviors.

Author Biography

Nancy B. Swigert, M.A., CCC-SLP, is the Director of Speech-Language Pathology & Respiratory Care at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY. Prior to that, for 26 years, she was president of Swigert & Associates, Inc., a private practice. In addition to her administrative duties, she evaluates and treats children and adults with voice disorders. Nancy works closely with several otolaryngology practices as well as a pulmonary group. Nancy is very active in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, including serving as its president in 1998 and president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation in 2004-2005. She has written many professional resources, including The Source for Children's Voice Disorders (2005, LinguiSystems, Inc.).
