Activity Description

This course details working with adults with dysphagia. In-depth information is provided on the different types of assessments and how to perform and interpret them. Detailed case examples and numerous comparative charts help to build skills in dysphagia management. Special considerations for working with patients in intensive care are identified. This course offers 0.8 CEUs / 8 CEEs.

Learner Objectives

Participants who successfully complete this activity will be able to:

  1. Identify Medicare expectations and other billing issues
  2. Provide suggestions for educating patients and their families, staff, physicians, and payers
  3. Compare and contrast a Clinical Bedside Screening to an Instrumental Assessment of Swallowing as well as make comparisons between the different types of instrumental assessments (MBS and FEES)
  4. Plan a dysphagia treatment program including short- and long-term goals, treatment techniques, dysphagia diets, and documentation of treatment
  5. Explain special considerations for patients in intensive care

Author Biography

Nancy B. Swigert is the director of Speech-Language Pathology and Respiratory Care at Central Baptist Hospital, an acute care facility in Lexington, KY. Prior to this, for twenty six years, Nancy was the President of Swigert & Associates, Inc. and The Reading Center, a private practice providing speech-language pathology services and reading intervention in the Central Kentucky area. She is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Nancy received her master's degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She is a former President of the Kentucky Speech-Language-Hearing Association (KSHA), the Council of State Association Presidents, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Board of Trustees. She continues to serve on the Foundation Board, is the Coordinator for Division 13, Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, and chairs the Health Care Economics Committee for ASHA. She was twice awarded the Honors of KSHA and is a Fellow of ASHA. Her main interests are in the area of pediatric and adult dysphagia and other neurogenic disorders. She has authored seven publications with LinguiSystems: The Source for Dysphagia, The Source for Dysarthria, The Source for Pediatric Dysphagia, The Source for Reading Fluency, The Early Intervention Kit, The Source for Children's Voice Disorders and Reading Fluency and Comprehension: Activities & Exercises. She lectures extensively in the areas of dysphagia and motor speech disorders.
