Activity Description

This course provides an overview of the history and status of cochlear implant (CI) technology. Information about the implant decision-making process; surgery and activation of the CI; assessment and intervention strategies for children with cochlear implants at all age levels, in the home, school and community environments are included.

Activity Audience

This presentation is for Speech-Language Pathologists.

Learner Objectives

Participants who successfully complete this activity will be able to:

  1. Describe the history behind cochlear implant technology
  2. Explain the importance of and describe the basic components of a cochlear implant and how to care for it
  3. Identify professional responsibilities of cochlear implant team members and practical considerations for selecting a mode of communication for children with cochlear implants
  4. Identify specific techniques for assessment of speech, language, and communication for children with cochlear implants
  5. Identify strategies and techniques for parents and professionals to utilize as they work to facilitate auditory development in children with cochlear implants
  6. Provide specific suggestions to help children with cochlear implants maximize their oral communication abilities

Author Biography

David J. Ertmer, Ph.D., is an associate professor in Audiology and Speech Sciences at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. He received a B.S. from Marquette University, a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University, all in the field of Communication Disorders.

His clinical career includes 17 years as a school speech pathologist in Wisconsin and Colorado. Currently, he teaches courses in aural rehabilitation and clinical methods, and conducts research in early speech and language development in young children with hearing loss. David and his wife Peg, an associate professor in Educational Technology at Purdue University, have four children. He is also the author of Contrasts for Auditory & Speech Training (CAST), published by LinguiSystems, Inc.
