Become a LinguiSystems author!
Lauren Kanefsky did!

Lauren Kanefsky works with some of her students from the
New York City public schools using the materials she submitted to
LinguiSystems for publication.

Lauren Kanefsky, MS, CCC-SLP, received her Bachelor’s degree from the George Washington University in 2001 and her Master’s degree in Speech/Language Pathology from Teacher’s College, Columbia University in 2003.  Lauren previously worked as a speech-language pathologist in the New York City public schools for four years and is currently in New Jersey where she provides services to children primarily in preschool through fifth grade.  She is also involved in providing early intervention services for children under the age of three years.

Lauren’s first product with LinguiSystems, Inference Card Games, debuted in January.  We asked her to share her experience of publishing with LinguiSystems, and here's what she had to say:

LS: Some people may consider it too time consuming, too much of a long-shot, or perhaps too intimidating to put together a product proposal and submit it to a publisher.  What made you decide to publish for the first time?
Lauren: As a fairly new SLP starting out in the schools, I had limited resources to purchase a variety of materials.  I was constantly trying to think up new and exciting games and activities to keep my students engaged and interested in learning.  When I saw the page in the catalog headed “Publish with Us!” I figured that if my kids like my games so much, maybe others will too.  I created a prototype of the game, submitted the necessary forms, and waited for a response.  It was that easy!  A few weeks later I received an email from Product Development telling me LinguiSystems was interested in my ideas!

LS: Why did you choose LinguiSystems to publish your materials?
Lauren: As a practicing SLP in the schools, I was familiar with LinguiSystems and always found their materials to be the most functional and easy to use.  I never considered submitting my proposal to another publishing company.

LS: You originally submitted your card games to LinguiSystems as Bingo games.  How did you feel about changing the format of your product and the process you went through with LinguiSystems to develop the Inference Card Games concept?
Lauren: I was so excited that even though my original submission for Inference Bingo was not viewed as marketable, the Product Development team was still very much interested in my approach to teaching inferences and asked me to revise it.  I was told to look at the “Card Game” series, and I quickly adapted my stimuli to meet the format for Inference Card Games.  Once I was contacted by the editor, Paul Johnson, I was provided with great suggestions for changing some of the stimulus cards in order to make my game reflect everyday life and have wide appeal throughout the US and Canada.  Paul kept me so well informed throughout the editing process, always emailing me for my comments, suggestions, and approval.  I was very much a part of the entire process.

LS: In general, what would you tell prospective authors about publishing with LinguiSystems?
Lauren: I think that many SLPs in the schools are faced with the challenge of continuously keeping their students interested and engaged throughout sessions.  I think SLPs would be surprised at how many activities they have developed over the years that would benefit millions of students.  I took a chance with LinguiSystems because my students were taking an active interest and learning the material I presented in an engaging environment.  Once you send in your proposal, don’t be let down if you are asked to revise certain components.  There is a team of experts willing to help make the process run as smooth as possible.  LinguiSystems is a wonderful company with a caring and attentive staff helping you out every step of the way.  I look forward to publishing with them again!

How can LinguiSystems help you develop your idea into a marketable product?

We’re looking for practical materials that are comprehensive, adaptable, and user-friendly. Materials that reflect the curriculum are especially welcome. Keep in mind that your product doesn’t need to be in polished, final format in order for us to consider it for publication.

When should I contact LinguiSystems?
Anytime! If you have a product idea in an organized form, send it to us for review. If we need more information, we'll let you know. Our purpose in reviewing your product idea is to determine its appeal to our customers. We don't judge a product submission by its looks . . . we judge it on the quality of its content and how well it will appeal to our customers.

How should I contact LinguiSystems?
You can call, write, or e-mail us about submitting materials for review. We'll send you three documents to complete, including a release form to sign and return with your potential product (or you can print these documents directly from this site - see below). This release form allows us to review your material before making a commitment to you to publish it. Just as importantly, the release form assures you that, in the event your material is not accepted, LinguiSystems will not claim the rights to it.

What happens when I send my product idea to LinguiSystems?
When you send us your product idea, our acquisitions team, comprised of speech-language pathologists and other educators, reviews your submission and considers its marketability and production costs. We usually complete our review within four to six weeks, and, of course, we'll correspond with you regarding our impressions as quickly as possible. After our review, we will return all of your original materials whether or not we decide to publish your idea.

How complete should my product idea be?
The more information you can send us, the better we can understand your materials. We don't expect a finished, polished product. We need to understand the purpose of the product, who the product is for, and what components are included in the product. Generally, an overall guide to the product plus a sample of what will be in the product will be enough to get us started. If we need more information, we'll let you know.

What about artwork?
Sketches or descriptions of pictures are just fine. We don't expect you to provide artwork. Should we decide to publish your product, we will coordinate and finance the artwork. By using our own artists, we can closely supervise and coordinate the artwork from beginning to end. Whatever the art needs are, we'll work with you and the artists to assure a high quality product.

What kinds of products interest LinguiSystems most?
We know you value practical instructional materials, just as your colleagues do. Our products range from reproducible workbooks to carefully standardized tests, from illustrated cards to easy-to-play games. We look for products that are innovative, effective, comprehensive, diagnostic, concise, multicultural, and adaptable. Send us your ideas you've been using for years — they're usually the best!

Who buys from LinguiSystems?
Speech-language pathologists, LD teachers, special educators, reading specialists, and general education teachers are our usual customers. Since the great majority of these professionals work in public and private schools, our materials have the broadest appeal to children from birth through high school. We also have outstanding products for parents to use at home with their children and for adults with communication disorders.

How will I benefit from publishing with LinguiSystems?

There are many reasons to join our team of authors, including these:

  • You'll earn a royalty for each copy of your product we sell. You can check with us anytime to see how your product is selling, and you'll receive detailed royalty reports with your royalty check four times a year.
  • You'll get a 30% discount on LinguiSystems products for your personal use.
  • If you make presentations, we'll send door prizes and full-color flyers featuring your product(s).
  • We provide the illustrations and graphic design, and you'll confer with our editing/publishing team to develop the layout of your product. It's amazing to watch your text or activities come alive with engaging pictures and professional page design!
  • Our editing teams include experienced SLPs and detailed proofers who will make sure your product is topnotch and easy-to-use.
  • You'll multiply your ability to "make a difference"! With thousands of clinicians using your materials, you will share your expertise with many more students and professional colleagues than you could possibly reach by yourself.

Is there anything else I should know?
Yes! We treat potential and contracted authors with respect, professionalism, and attention to individual needs. Should we contract with you, our product development team will be in close touch with you while preparing your manuscript for printing. Although we do make the final marketing, production, and artwork decisions, your input is valuable to us. You're a key member of the product development team!
