Saunders,
M.S.,
CCC-SLP
, is a speech-language pathologist in Rockland County, New York.
She currently works in a public school servicing students in grades 5-7. She and her husband, Michael, have two children, Jayne and Joshua, and a dog, Romeo. We caught up with Michele to ask her to share her experience of publishing with us, and here’s what she had to say:
- LS:
How did you first come up with your product ideas for the Autism & PDD Things I Can Say and Do series and Autism & PDD Tell Me About It?
- Michele:
-
As a speech-language pathologist, I have had the opportunity to help children who have communication disorders and autism/pervasive development disorders to access and/or initiate language. I recognize that children with autism often present with strength in concrete and literal tasks and know that this population most often exhibits visual learning styles. As a result, I designed the Autism & PDD Things I Can Say and Do series and Autism & PDD Tell Me About It. These materials provide students on the autism spectrum and students with communication disorders functional and relevant activities that allow them to break the complex code of the English language.

Before contacting us, did you have any concerns about submitting your ideas to a publisher for review and possible publication, and if so, what were they?
- Michele:
-
My main concern was being unfamiliar with the whole “getting published” process. I knew I wanted to get my ideas “out there” so other SLPs would have the opportunity to use my activities to help their students achieve functional language development, but I wasn’t sure how to go about it. I started checking out some websites to see the Publisher Guidelines and was grabbed by the author feature on your site. It showed another SLP who had a great idea and described how you worked with her to make a wonderful finished product. I knew then that you were the right publisher for me too!
- LS:
-
What did you like best about the submission process?
- Michele:
-
For one, it was so easy to do! I just downloaded the submission forms from your website, completed them, and sent them in with a thorough sample of my activities. The best part, though, was hearing back from you so quickly and receiving such positive feedback from your Intake team. You seemed as excited as I was about my ideas, and that was and is a great feeling!
- LS:
-
What are your impressions of working with us to develop and market your ideas?
- Michele:
-
Working with you is such a positive experience – so positive that I collaborated with you a second time to publish my ideas. I have been fortunate to work with two great editors who have been receptive to my ideas and concerns throughout the process of developing my materials into marketable products. I appreciate the fact that your editors and your Intake team take my opinions, thoughts, and feelings into consideration throughout the production process. I look forward to publishing with you again and again!
- LS:
-
What advice would you give to SLPs who may be interested in publishing their ideas with us?
- Michele:
-
If you’re like me and always wanted to get your ideas out into the marketplace so they could help other students and colleagues, I say, “Go for it!” SLPs are always working on creating innovative and interesting products to keep our students engaged in learning. Just think – one of your ideas may be the one that can help so many others with communication needs. LinguiSystems helped me to make a dream of mine come true. Maybe they can do it for you too!
How can LinguiSystems help you develop your idea into a marketable product?
- When should I contact LinguiSystems?
-
Anytime! If you have a product idea in an organized form, send it to us for review. If we need more information, we'll let you know. Our purpose in reviewing your product idea is to determine its appeal to our customers. We don't judge a product submission by its looks...we judge it on the quality of its content and how well it will appeal to our customers.
- How should I contact LinguiSystems?
-
You can call, write, or e-mail us about submitting materials for review. We'll send you three documents to complete, including a release form to sign and return with your potential product (or you can print these documents directly from this site - see below). This release form allows us to review your material before making a commitment to you to publish it. Just as importantly, the release form assures you that, in the event your material is not accepted, LinguiSystems will not claim the rights to it.
- What happens when I send my product idea to LinguiSystems?
-
When you send us your product idea, our acquisitions team, comprised of speech-language pathologists and other educators, reviews your submission and considers its marketability and production costs. We usually complete our review within four to six weeks, and, of course, we'll correspond with you regarding our impressions as quickly as possible. After our review, we will return all of your original materials whether or not we decide to publish your idea.
- How complete should my product idea be?
-
The more information you can send us, the better we can understand your materials. We don't expect a finished, polished product. We need to understand the purpose of the product, who the product is for, and what components are included in the product. Generally, an overall guide to the product plus a sample of what will be in the product will be enough to get us started. If we need more information, we'll let you know.
- What about artwork?
-
Sketches or descriptions of pictures are just fine. We don't expect you to provide artwork. Should we decide to publish your product, we will coordinate and finance the artwork. By using our own artists, we can closely supervise and coordinate the artwork from beginning to end. Whatever the art needs are, we'll work with you and the artists to assure a high quality product.
- What kinds of products interest LinguiSystems most?
-
We know you value practical instructional materials, just as your colleagues do. Our products range from reproducible workbooks to carefully standardized tests, from illustrated cards to easy-to-play games. We look for products that are innovative, effective, comprehensive, diagnostic, concise, multicultural, and adaptable. Send us your ideas you've been using for years–they're usually the best!
- Who buys from LinguiSystems?
-
Speech-language pathologists, LD teachers, special educators, reading specialists, and general education teachers are our usual customers. Since the great majority of these professionals work in public and private schools, our materials have the broadest appeal to children from birth through high school. We also have outstanding products for parents to use at home with their children and for adults with communication disorders.
- How will I benefit from publishing with LinguiSystems?
-
There are many reasons to join our team of authors, including these:
- You'll earn a royalty for each copy of your product we sell. You can check with us anytime to see how your product is selling, and you'll receive detailed royalty reports with your royalty check four times a year.
- You'll get a 30% discount on LinguiSystems products for your personal use.
- If you make presentations, we'll send door prizes and full-color flyers featuring your product(s).
- We provide the illustrations and graphic design, and you'll confer with our editing/publishing team to develop the layout of your product. It's amazing to watch your text or activities come alive with engaging pictures and professional page design!
- Our editing teams include experienced SLPs and detailed proofers who will make sure your product is topnotch and easy-to-use.
- You'll multiply your ability to "make a difference"! With thousands of clinicians using your materials, you will share your expertise with many more students and professional colleagues than you could possibly reach by yourself.
- Is there anything else I should know?
-
Yes! We treat potential and contracted authors with respect, professionalism, and attention to individual needs. Should we contract with you, our product development team will be in close touch with you while preparing your manuscript for printing. Although we do make the final marketing, production, and artwork decisions, your input is valuable to us. You're a key member of the product development team!
