Test Purpose
The subtests on the TOAL-4 are designed to measure five features of language (semantics, grammar, graphology, phonology, and pragmatics), two modes of language (oral and written), and two systems of language (receptive and expressive).

Test Procedure
Begin testing with the first subtest, first item, and proceed through the rest of the test.  For each subtest, discontinue testing when the student gives three consecutive incorrect responses.  Use the Examiner Record Booklet for the Word Opposites, Word Derivations, and Spoken Analogies subtests.  Use the Written Language Form for Word Similarities, Sentence Combining, and Orthographic Usage Subtests.


Examiner Qualifications
This test may be administered and interpreted by professionals familiar with normal language development, language disorders, and who are formally trained in assessment.
