A large variety of games in this book gives you lots of teaching options:

  • reinforce several semantic skill areas
  • teach vocabulary by themes
  • games at two difficulty levels
  • use the games for therapy, learning centers, and take-home activities

  • customize many of the game boards with your own stimulus items

Games 1-25 contain words relevant for grades 1-3.  The vocabulary is arranged by theme and includes topics such as animals, community, math concepts, geography, money, the arts, seasons, signs, tools, transportation, and more.

Games 26-50 are organized by vocabulary skill and incorporate words appropriate for grades 3-6.  The skill areas include:  context clues, associations, multiple meanings, figurative language, Greek and Latin roots, synonyms and antonyms, attributes, abbreviations, homophones, and analogies.

The games are easy to set up and play.  You will need different-colored game tokens, dice, plastic game chips, blocks, and coins to play many of the games.  Distribute the games as printed, or color and laminate them for future use.

Patti Halfman, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who spends her workday talking with LinguiSystems customers.  Before joining the staff of LinguiSystems, Patti worked in various school settings helping children in preschool through high school.  Patti is also the author of 100% Language Intermediate and Primary and is the co-author of Scissors, Glue, and Vocabulary, Too!  

Paul F. Johnson, B.A., is an editor and writer for LinguiSystems.  He lives in rural Illinois with his wife, Kenya; daughters, Maureen and Lauren; and son, Paul.  Paul is particularly interested in developing critical thinking, writing, and reading skills in students of all ages.  Paul is the author of a number of LinguiSystems titles, including 50 Quick-Play Language Games and 50 Quick-Play Grammar Games, and the co-author of many other titles.


Both experience and research have shown that students learn new vocabulary best if it is presented in a variety of contexts.  The games in this book were designed to complement your direct, strategy-based vocabulary instruction with indirect, supplemental vocabulary awareness approaches that allow your students to interact with words in a number of ways.  Students who play the games in this book will be presented with curriculum-relevant and age-appropriate words in both verbal and written contexts.

50 Quick-Play Vocabulary Games is essentially two books in one.  Games 1-25 are arranged by theme and contain words relevant for grades 1-3.  Games 26-50 are organized by vocabulary skill and incorporate words appropriate for grades 3-6.

The words contained in 50 Quick-Play Vocabulary Games were compiled from a variety of sources, including the McRel Institute's grade-leveled General Reading Vocabulary Lists, the Tampa Reads Reading Keys program, and a general survey of current curriculum textbooks and sources.

We encourage you to play and re-play the games with your students so they can master the various word relationships.  You may also add the words presented in the games to your students' vocabulary journals or the class word wall.  You might also send photocopied games and game materials home so your students can practice these concepts with their families.  We hope that some of these games can be enjoyed on a recreational, as well as, educational level.

One of the biggest challenges of writing a book of this type is to create a variety of games that will not only present the concepts accurately but that will also engage students at the same time.  We hope we have provided you with fifty new ways to supplement your vocabulary instruction.  Have fun!
