Test Purpose
Measure your student's ability to isolate individual phonemes in spoken words and understand the relationships between letters and phonemes in order to determine if she's at risk for developing early reading skills.

 

Subtests

  • Kindergarten Version:
    • Subtest 1: Initial Sound—Same Items and Initial Sound—Different Items
    • Subtest 2: Letter Sounds
  • Early Elementary Version
    • Subtest 1: Ending Sound—Same Items and Ending Sound—Different Items
    • Subtest 2: Letter Sounds

Testing Time

  • Kindergarten Version: 30-45 minutes
  • Early Elementary Version: 15-30 minutes

  • Normal Curve Equivalents

Test Procedure
The test can be administered to groups or individuals.  Begin with the Orientation items which will validate that the student can respond appropriately.  Proceed to the first subtest and administer each item according to the directions in the Examiner's Manual.  All items are administered.

 

Examiner Qualifications
This test may be administered and interpreted by professionals familiar with normal phonological awareness skill development, reading disorders, and who are formally trained in testing.
