The perception and conceptualization of speech sounds is important to reading. Now the LAC 3 also measures the cognitive ability to distinguish and manipulate sounds, two skills critical to reading and spelling success.

Begin with the first item in each category and continue until all items in each category are given or until a ceiling is reached. The ceiling is a total of five errors that do not need to be consecutive except in Isolated Phoneme Patterns and Counting Syllables (Mulitsyllables).
This test may be administered and interpreted by professionals who have professional training in assessment and phonological awareness disorders.
